I've been thinking about this subject for a couple days now and I have yet to come up with an answer. So, I ask the GO community:

What is success measured in? The number of people you know? How much money you have? Your position in a company, i.e. Supervisor, Manager, CFO, CEO? A small business entrepreneur? The list goes on.

How do you, as individuals, define success?

Takal pressed himself up against the edge of the building, appearing to any onlookers like a piece of masonry. The moon was out in Rasaiga's Point that night, and it bathed the city in a soft blue glow.

Drunken laughter echoed from the docklands, but in the back alleys, far from the river, silence pressed in like a blanket over the world. Doors were shut the length of the street, windows boarded up. This was the only town truly free of the New Order, and that was because even they couldn't control the chaos. That was just as Takal liked it.

He shifted his mass as a figure stepped into the light further down the street. The man walked with the grace of a master swordsman, and wore no garment or armour save for a full length robe belted around his waist with a sash. A single katana hung at the figure's side.

The man walked unawares into the alley, and Takal held up a clawed finger to the other side of the street where his partner waited. Three fingers up. Two. One.

Recettear is a japanese RPG style game, you play as a girl, Recette, running her own item shop to repay the debt her dad ran up when he decided to run off and become an adventurer (And persumably got killed). Fairy debt collector Tear is there to make sure she makes the weekly repayments or her house gets reposessed. Lovely stuff :D

This game has been translated as the debut project for Carpe Fulger, an americal localisation company comprising a couple of goons from the SA forum. And its a damn good game!

Its got a september 10th release date, the demo is available either direct from Carpe Fulger or Steam:

Take a more realistic example: Should we spend, say, a billion dollars a year to subsidize end-of-life health care for poor people? It would be, I think, a terrible mistake to settle this question without at least asking whether the recipients might prefer that we spend our billion dollars some other way — say by subsidizing their groceries or just giving them cash. If so, the difference in value between what they’re getting and what they could be getting (as measured by the recipients) is a deadweight loss. The bigger that deadweight loss, the more we should reconsider our spending priorities.

Now once again, efficiency is not the be-all and end-all of policy analysis. Even if poor people prefer subsidized groceries to subsidized health care, we might still choose to give them health care if, for example, we believe that they are less likely to make wise decisions about their own health care than about their own groceries, or if we’re afraid that subsidizing groceries (or handing out cash) is somehow more likely to invite fraud. But the bigger the deadweight loss, the more we should probably rethink those concerns, because the bigger the deadweight loss, the more opportunity there is to improve life for the recipients. That’s the first reason we should care about efficiency.

The second reason we should care about efficiency is that efficiency analysis strikes down political smokescreens. Like this:

Politician: Here’s my program to make the health care system work better by subsidizing health care for the poor.

Economist: Your program costs a billion dollars and delivers half a billion dollars worth of benefits. That’s inefficient.

Politician: So what?

Economist: Well, the “so what” is that maybe you could take that billion dollars and deliver a full billion dollars worth of benefits instead if you spent it a little differently. Why not just hand the cash out to poor people?

Politician: Because I don’t want to help all poor people. I only want to help sick poor people — and this is the only way I can think of to do that.

Economist: Ah. So your goal here is not to make the health care system work better after all. Instead it’s to transfer resources to sick poor people.

Politician: I guess so.

Economist: That’s fine. Now we can have a healthy debate about whether that’s what we want to do.

And now, you see, thanks to the economist’s insistence on thinking about efficiency, we end up having an honest debate about the politician’s real goal instead of a dishonest debate about the politician’s feigned goal. However the debate turns out, that’s a useful exercise.

First off is there a tech forum? I kinda feel like their should be unless no one is interested but i figured here would be fine.

So would you buy one? this was a little article featured in Engadget

Essentially Sony Ericson is planning on producing a phone using android software combining with the PSP tech. sounds pretty cool since if you look at the PSPgo, the only thing that would make it awesome is if it could make phone calls.

Quote:

There's no question that gaming on the Android platform has heretofore been relatively underwhelming, but that looks like it's all about to change. It seems that Sony Ericsson -- a company that has yet to even introduce an Android 2.0 device -- is at work on a project to redefine gaming on Google's mobile platform. We now know (via a trusted source) that the company is actively and heavily developing a brand new gaming platform, ecosystem, and device (possibly alongside Google) which are already in the late stages of planning. And we've got the goods on it.

Here's what we can tell you about the hardware: if you're a gaming fan, this is exactly the kind of phone you've been waiting for. The device is described as cross between the Samsung Captivate and the PSP Go -- in other words, it's a landscape slider with game controls in place of the typical QWERTY keyboard. The D-pad is here, but instead of the small joystick, the device will have what was described as a "long touch pad" for analog controls, along with standard PSP buttons and shoulder buttons. The phone has a large display, described as being between 3.7 and 4.1 inches with WVGA or better resolution, a 5 megapixel camera that we're told might not be final, and it'll likely have a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU on board. The phone is mostly black with some silver highlights, and the gamepad area is white / silver in color. Apparently it's currently branded as a Xperia device, but it looks like it will carry PlayStation branding as well. Those who've seen the phone say it looks "pretty damn sexy." The mockup above probably doesn't do the actual hardware justice, but it should give you an idea of what you'll be dealing with.

On the software side, it looks like the device will be running Gingerbread (Android 3.0) with a phone-specific skin, and there will be a new area of the Android Market specifically for the games. That content will be initially accessible only by the halo device, but from the sounds of things, these titles might be made available to other Android phones if their specs and button layouts meet requirements. Games will be graphically in the range of PSX or PSP games, meaning true 3D gaming is headed to Android. Titles currently being shown off seem to be focused around some older PSX as well as new PSP offerings, with God of War, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, and LittleBigPlanet possibly on tap, and future plans for titles which incorporate augmented reality features.

In terms of release, it's possible that the phone and ecosystem could be introduced as early as October of this year, but we have yet to confirm.

Right now we're working on getting even more detail about the phone and partnership, but we can tell you now that this is not a random rumor -- we have reason to believe that what we've heard and seen is real and coming to market. It makes perfect sense in a way -- Google gets a much-needed push into the gaming and entertainment space for Android, while Sony (via its partnership with Ericsson) finally delivers the PlayStation phone users have been wanting. We see it as a major win for both companies and the consumer... and we always need another distraction. Stay tuned to this space for updates as we get them, and in the meantime, start socking away the pennies.
